About the academic internship program at Tiffin University
The academic internship program at Tiffin University is an experiential education opportunity that provides a link between the classroom and the workplace. It is an opportunity for the student to learn about her/his area of academic interest through practical experience.
In today’s competitive job market, employers are looking for experience coupled with a college education. Internships allow the students to gain work experience through an academic relationship with the college and the employer. An internship can be a single semester or finite time period that may be paid or unpaid, and can be for academic credit.
An internship is required of some majors and can be available for all majors. Tiffin University has many established internships and a potential for many more.

Begin your investigation well before your Junior year.
- Talk with your academic advisor to determine if an internship is required and how it will fit into your major curriculum. If your advisor is not a faculty member in your major department you should also speak to someone in your major.
- It is your responsibility to identify an internship site.
- Identify a faculty member in your major who is willing to be your faculty internship supervisor.
- Ask the Internship Coordinator for your school for information on existing internship sites.
- Investigate other sites that appeal to you. With your faculty supervisor’s permission you may be able to do this on your own. Perhaps you know of an agency or business in your hometown where you would like to work. Feel free to make that first contact.
Eligibility
Students in the Bachelor program must have completed fifty-five (55) credit hours prior to the start of the internship and be in good academic standing in the major (2.50 cumulative grade point average) to enroll for an internship. Credit hours from previous institutions will be used in the total hours, which will qualify students for internships. Students must complete at least one semester at Tiffin University prior to being eligible to complete their internship. To comply with F-1 visa regulations, international students must complete a minimum of two full-time semesters at Tiffin University before starting an internship. Internship requirements are applicable to double degree and/or double majors. Additional requirements may be determined by departments. The internship application must be submitted to the Registrar for registration, prior to beginning the internship.
PLEASE NOTE: Both, students who are doing a clinical internship in addiction counseling towards a clinical license, and graduate students, have additional requirements and assessments. Students need to contact the faculty supervisor prior to the internship for a list of these additional requirements.
Academic Requirements
- The student will meet with her/his faculty advisor prior to the beginning of the internship to set learning goals and determine the content and timing of academic activities.
- The student will contact her/his faculty advisor throughout the internship to discuss progress toward attaining learning goals and completion of academic activities.
- The student will communicate all problems that arise during the internship to their faculty advisor and/or the Internship Coordinator.
Internship Requirements
Actual requirements will vary from major to major and school to school. Talk with someone in your major to determine just what the requirements will be. They could include, but are not limited to:
- A minimum number of hours on the job
- Writing and submitting a work plan prior to participation.
- Keeping a journal.
- Writing a paper.

Out of State Internships
Tiffin University is a member of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), an organization which establishes national standards for the interstate offering of postsecondary distance-education courses and programs. SARA has established standards for reciprocity agreements that colleges and universities from around the country would follow. Through SARA, TU will be able to provide distance education to residents of any other SARA member state without seeking authorization from those SARA member states.
Courses and programs that incorporate internships, practicum, or student teaching, which are referred to as “supervised field experience” are covered by SARA membership. A “supervised field experience” under SARA denotes a student learning experience that has the supervision of a mentor, supervisor, faculty member or other qualified professional, located in the host state, who has a direct or indirect reporting responsibility to the institution where the student is enrolled as a student, whether or not credit is granted. While SARA covers internships, TU has to notify the state of the presence of our student. There is a limit on the number of students that can complete internships in another state.
